Since July 20, 2023, the export of non-basmati white rice has been prohibited to maintain domestic supply levels. However, exceptions are made for specific countries upon government approval to fulfill their food security requirements. Recently, the government granted permission for the export of 14,000 tonnes of non-basmati white rice to Mauritius.

This allowance, conveyed through a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), facilitates the export via the National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL). Notably, India has previously permitted similar exports to African nations like Tanzania, Djibouti, and Guinea-Bissau, along with other countries such as Nepal, Cameroon, Cote D’ Ivore, Guinea, Malaysia, Philippines, and Seychelles.

NCEL, a cooperative society jointly promoted by key entities including AMUL, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, and NAFED, plays a pivotal role in facilitating these exports, ensuring efficient trade operations.
